Ragasiyam

Ragasiyam is our most recent track, a love duet. We wanted to do a
ballad, but not sure how close we came to one! Tones are primarily
from the Fantom rack, korg TR rack, xphraze,Kontakt and hypersonic. We still feel we could have programmed more interesting rhy :)
Credits
Female vocals : Anusha Pradeep
Male vocals : Shyam
Flute : Praveen
Lyrics : Rangan (a.k.a Barathi Maalu)
Music : shyam prasan and praveen
Song Recorded and Mixed at TSJ STUDIO ,Chennai

Anusha's voice on this song has come out very well, her husky tone
probably one of the best elements in the song.

Very nice work! Great to see ppl experiment with stuff.
Aside, I love the details that you provide in the site. In addition to this can you ppl provide more info on the raaga(s) used? A general write-up on how it all started, how you introduced new things at each moment of the song whenever something significant changes in the song. ;-). Ya, asking for too much :-).

Guyz - Now I've come to expect good quality music from you all - and you did meet it. Agree with most others - the lead female vocals stole the show. Constructive critcism: I beleive you guyz could have done better on the charanam lead tune - perhaps done in a hurry may be? It is a little sour in some spots - compared to the nice beginning. How about if you have another go at it - may be re-post at a later date with an alternative charanam - that is if you agree with me.. :)

keep that music coming.

@ganesh

Thanks for the comments :) and yeah, we do use lot of soft synths. Ever since we stumbled upon Spectrasonic's atmosphere/trilogy and stylus, our soft synth collection has been on the increase. The tones that the soft synths have are getting as close to the real instrument as possible, and we figured that some of the soft synth tones are a tad better than the hardware keyboards/sound modules. Though I guess the best part with a soft synth, for us, is that we get to edit the tones much easier.

@NV Sir, Anup, Rams, Kiranz

thankx for the comments..Even ive been telling Anusha that her voice on this song is one of the best parts. Btw, She is a "december season kutcheri singer"!

@Yogi

Even we hve been thinking something is missing, but unable to pinpoint what. Maybe the rhythm? We broke our heads over this more 3 weeks before we put this up here :) heh heh

@Prasanna

Not too sure abt the raaga...traces of Ananda Bhairavi? we find it difficult to stick to one raaga and we end up including a note here and there which is not true to that raaga.
abt how it started...m not too sure :D heh heh. We usually come up with the main melody first (sometimes the second line of the pallavi comes up first) and then try to fix the chords, rhythm, other instruments and the bass lines, mostly in that order. Like for the melange track, we came up with the second line first, on the sapthaswarangal third demo track, the hook like (tanda na na...) came first..
Ofcourse, we keep listening to the tracks again and again, a zillion times, till our neighbours start wondering if something is wrong with us :D, and add layers as and when we think of something. It is a very slow process for us actually.
Thanks for listening in :)

@Nandu,

Thanks for the comments. Yes. We do need to get back to that charanam some time and try to fix it up. We have been thinking that this song has been lacking something, but not sure what. Will keep you posted when me make the changes.

Awesome tunes.....Totally different...I just wonder what these will sound like when you get all that you want to use...ie...in a film ambience....yes the charanam needs a litttle tweaking to do. Also the male vocals do not match up to the female....
One more doubt... What the hell are u doing here on blogging world?? You belong to the world of A.R.R & H.J.R....This is not your domain...So I pray that you land up there fast.....
Would love to work with you guys some day...

@Pradeep ji,

though we are flattered by your comments, honestly, I think its a bit out of place. We are no where in the ARR, HJ league...not even at a striking distance...miles to go...and bridges to build! We learn a lot by just listening to ARR and HJ, in terms of layers, orchestration, chords and mixing, and still have so much to learn.
Really happy that such an experienced and knowledgeable person like you enjoy our tunes. Would be our honour to work with you, do let us knwo when you come to Chennai.
Many thanks

hi team...first time am listening to your music. Soundtrack generates amazing warmth! very well done. Anusha is sure to go places.

Possible impovements: Song dips in Charanam after a bright interlude start. And the shift to a major chord in the later half of charanam doesnt augur well with the whole song.

Expect a lot more to come from you all!!!!

Anusha Pradeep's voice has been awesome in this masterpiece.
Shyam is also good, but i need to single out Anusha.
Very raw voice and truly mesmerising in the context of the music.
I am a die hard fan of ARR's tamil oldies. and believe me, i will rate this piece of music along with that Mozart.
Ragasiyam is simply awesome piece of work by you dudes.

Only thing i felt lacking in this one is , Anusha's singing of 'Ragasiyam.....' kept me asking for more !!!
i mean, the verse is repeated just 2 or 3 times, in the music.
I would love to have this one as a 5 min song, instead of the 3 minute one !!
It leaves me craving for more !!
so i keep on listening it many times over ! :-)

Hats off to you guys for this one, too good :-)

Hey hi.....TSJ team..... My name is VASAN and i am a sound engineering student studying in australia...I am into programming as well...The ragasiyam song is very good..... The composition is good... You guys have a good carnatic music influence in your compositions...The orchestration is ..hmmmm...If i have to leave a constructive criticism.. I would say your programming has to improve a lot... To be honest, the rhythm sucks at some places... It seems like you have used Latigo loops for your rythm arrangement..... You guys should try some real time sequencing with sampler instruments like NATIVE INSTRUMENTS BATTERY 3...It has real depth...i beleive...i have been programmin with it... I recommend it very strongly. Dulcimer sound in the BGM needs more tweaking.... I mean the way it has been programmed is perfect...The idea is there.. But its just the Tone that lacks professionalism....You have a mesmerising tune here...But there are some unwanted clusters....Like some RMX loops in the BGM...My opinion is you have to do a more REFINED sequencing........ BUT apart from all these flaws....THIS SONG ROCKS......TRULY GREAT..... A MUSICAL TREAT....Keep up the good work....

At 7/01/2008 11:08:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I also recommend you guys to buy a MAC machine and use APPLE LOGIC in the future with your KORG M3 and motif and a bunch of other Virtual instruments........LOGIC is for musicians like as...IT is really GOOD....

I honestly think you guys should release your own album if you haven't done so already!
I am seriously in love with your music!

I know this is too late to comment on this song. But i heard it only a few days back and was blown away by it. Especially the first keyboard music is totally awesome and mindblowing.
